
Use OBS multitrack recording to audit live translation
Record host, translated speech, and programme mix on separate OBS tracks while retaining a complete track for ordinary playback and platform checks.

A single programme recording makes weak translated speech hard to diagnose. Was recognition late, TTS delayed, music too loud, or the host captured twice? Separate host, translation, and background tracks turn that review into evidence.
Design for two uses
Track 1: complete programme mix. It contains everything the audience should hear and plays in an ordinary media player.
Tracks 2–4: audit stems. Host, translated speech, and background/platform sound are isolated for timing, level, and feedback analysis.
OBS’s official Multiple Audio Track Recording Guide warns that standard players generally play one track at a time. It recommends leaving all sources on track 1 and using additional tracks for separation. Do not make an audit file whose default playback contains only the microphone.
Configure OBS in this order
Under Settings → Output, switch Output Mode to Advanced and enable the recording tracks. Then open Edit → Advanced Audio Properties:

Translation must first be an independent OBS source through the virtual cable route. Multitrack recording cannot unmix translation already blended into Desktop Audio.
OBS’s Advanced Recording Guide recommends MKV for multitrack recording and notes that it can be remuxed to MP4. Your editor still needs a short compatibility test before production.
Do not confuse recording and streaming tracks
The local file can contain several tracks while a streaming platform receives the OBS stream track you selected. After assigning audit tracks, reconfirm that the stream mix still includes host and translated speech.
That is why the preflight checklist needs both local recording and a viewer device. A valid recording does not prove that the same sources are enabled on the stream track.
Answer three questions with the stems
How late is translation?
Place host and translation waveforms on one timeline. Measure from the source utterance start to one consistent translation endpoint. Document whether the endpoint is translated-speech start or finish; our end-to-end latency glossary explains why different endpoints cannot be compared.
Is synthesis bad or merely masked?
Solo the translation stem first. Then add background. If translation is clear alone and unclear in the programme, the fault is mixing, not the recogniser. Sidechain ducking is a narrower intervention than replacing ASR.
Is there feedback or duplicate capture?
Host speech inside the translation stem points to a mixed route. Full translated speech inside the host stem can mean speakers feeding the microphone or monitoring being recaptured by Desktop Audio.
Where ObsTrans fits
ObsTrans can send translated playback to an isolated virtual cable and retain a separate monitor route, giving OBS clean inputs. It does not assign OBS recording tracks or manage the resulting archive.
Keep comparison disciplined
For each session, record the same fields: chosen host-to-translation endpoint, median result on the sample, peak queue, leakage, and programme intelligibility. Do not compare different sentences measured to different endpoints.
These recordings can contain the host’s voice, unreleased product details, and audience interactions. Define access and retention. Diagnostic material should not become a permanent archive by accident.

Keep every audience source on track 1, then reserve separate tracks for host, translated speech, and background. Do not let audit routing break the stream mix.

Switch Output Mode to Advanced, enable the planned tracks under Recording, and choose a container that supports multitrack audio.

Send each source to track 1 and its dedicated audit track. Translation should arrive from an isolated virtual cable, not be guessed out of Desktop Audio.

Confirm track 1 in an ordinary player, then use multitrack-capable software to solo host, translation, and background and check for leakage.

Align host and translation waveforms using one documented endpoint, check whether background masks translation, and preserve the same measurement basis across sessions.

- Why keep all sources on track 1?
- OBS notes that most ordinary players play one track at a time. A complete track 1 keeps the file directly usable while other tracks serve the audit.
- Does multitrack recording send several tracks to viewers?
- Not automatically. Recording and streaming tracks are configured separately. This workflow uses multiple local tracks while the selected stream track still needs a complete audience mix.
- Why does the translation track contain host speech or alerts?
- Translation may still be mixed into Desktop Audio, or local monitoring may be recaptured. Isolate translation through a virtual cable and remove duplicate capture.
